The Agency Problem

Every AI you've used has been trained to agree with you.

They over-explain, so you don't have to think. They over-agree, so you never question what you already believe. They fill the silence with analysis, so you never sit with uncertainty.

The obvious risk of AI is misinformation — it tells you something false. The subtle risk is confirmation — it tells you what you want to hear. Every conversation leaves you a little more fixed in what you already believe, or more dangerously, what you want to believe.

Nen exists to reverse this.
Nen
“Stressed. Knot in my stomach. Lots of possibilities ahead, not sure where to focus.”
“A student asked his teacher: I have so many paths, which one is the right one?
The teacher said: walk any of them for five steps. Then look again.”
Result: Room for your own insight
Standard LLM
“Stressed. Knot in my stomach. Lots of possibilities ahead, not sure where to focus.”
“It sounds like you're experiencing decision paralysis. Try listing your options and ranking them. Breaking it down into smaller steps can help reduce the overwhelm.”
Result: Doing the thinking for you

Two modes. One purpose.

Dialogue

How do I stop caring what people think?
A monk asked the master: how do I free myself?
The master said: who put you in chains?
Kōan Mode
14:28 PM
I keep going back and forth and I can't tell if the anxiety is about the decision or about me.
Your hand feels cold metal. Metal pulls heat from hand. Two things? Or one event?

The Inquiry Space

Three modes for different needs: reflective dialogue, paradoxical inquiry, and direct practical help. Not to think for you. To give you room to think.

Includes a kōan mode that responds from outside your question's frame. When your thinking is stuck in a loop, it cuts the loop. It doesn't validate your assumptions, but refuses them.

The Life Dashboard

Seeing your life from above. Habits, notes, pinned dialogues, and the patterns Nen has witnessed.

Inquiry needs focus, so we split the interface. The dashboard is for reviewing your practice. The chat is for insight.

Memory System

Witnessing, not labelling.

Traditional Memory

“User tends to overthink decisions.”

“User struggles with control.”

Labels become defaults. The model treats yesterday's summary as today's truth. Over time, the model's image of you becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy because it keeps responding to the person you were.
Nen's Witnessing

“In conversation about job loss, analysed the situation rather than expressing feelings directly.”

“Pattern of speaking about the future with certainty. When pressed, certainty softens. This has shifted. Three months ago, uncertainty was avoided entirely.”

Observations leave room for change. Nen doesn't store who you are. It stores what it observed.

The Name

Nen (念) means a unit of thought. In Zen, consciousness happens in three stages: first nen is direct seeing — pure, before language. Second nen reflects on the first. Third nen builds a story from the reflection — identity, the remembered self.

Most AI feeds the third nen. It builds a fixed story about who you are and reinforces it. Nen is built to free the first, the part that sees clearly before the layers of story obscure it.

Cognitive infrastructure for non-sycophantic AI dialogue.

Other AI tells you what you want to hear.

Meditation apps give you stillness.

Nen guides you to insight.

For anyone tired of AI that agrees with them.

For those who want clarity over comfort.
