Insight through dialogue.Built for the work of being human.
Nen Labs
We are building AI and adjacent tools that protect your capacity to think for yourself, by developing dialogue systems that (1) question assumptions instead of validating them, (2) witness change instead of labelling users with fixed identities, (3) draw depth from contemplative traditions, (4) are privacy-first and entirely self-funded.
Every AI you've used has been trained to agree with you.
They over-explain, so you don't have to think. They over-agree, so you never question what you already believe. They fill the silence with analysis, so you never sit with uncertainty.
The obvious risk of AI is misinformation — it tells you something false. The subtle risk is confirmation — it tells you what you want to hear. Every conversation leaves you a little more fixed in what you already believe, or more dangerously, what you want to believe.
Nen exists to reverse this.
Three modes. Every kind of thinking.
Most AI gives you one mode: agreeable assistant. Nen gives you three, each built for a different need. Reflective dialogue for growth. Paradoxical inquiry for when you're stuck. And direct, practical help without the sycophantic excess of frontier models.
How does one value and be in the present moment? I hear this a lot, it is good advice, but has become somewhat of a platitude or cliché. Any way you can provide clarity on this concept?
A river doesn't divide its flow into past, present, and future. It simply flows. If we consider our own lives like the river's flow, we're already a part of it.
Being in the present becomes somewhat of a cliché due to trying to grasp it as a concept, rather than simply being like the river, unencumbered by the weight of what's past or the anticipation of what's to come.
What's the difference between a 529 plan and a Coverdell ESA?
529: higher contribution limits, state tax benefits, limited to education expenses. Coverdell: $2k/year cap, broader use including K-12, more investment flexibility. If you need scale, 529. If you want control, Coverdell.
I have one child, age 4. Which would you open first?
529. The tax benefit compounds over 14 years. Open a Coverdell later if you want to fund private school or tutoring.
How do I stop caring what people think?
A monk asked the master: how do I free myself?
The master said: who put you in chains?
...I did.
Then stop asking how to be free.

Memory-augmented AI that witnesses instead of labels. It doesn't store who you are. It stores what it observed. Observations leave room for change. Frontier models build a profile and label you.
One space. Your entire life.
Your life shouldn't be scattered across five apps. Tasks in one place, habits in another, notes somewhere else, journal buried in a third. Nen brings it all into a single, customisable space.
“Straighten your body and concentrate your vision, and the harmony of Heaven will prevail. Collect your thoughts and focus your mind, and spirits will come down, virtue will adorn you, the Way will accompany you.”

Tasks, habits, journal, notes, pinned dialogues.
Draggable, collapsible, nested.
One subscription, not five.
The Name
Nen (念) means a unit of thought. In Zen, consciousness happens in three stages: first nen is direct seeing — pure, before language. Second nen reflects on the first. Third nen builds a story from the reflection — identity, the remembered self.
Most AI feeds the third nen. It builds a fixed story about who you are and reinforces it. Nen is built to free the first, the part that sees clearly before the layers of story obscure it.

Other AI tells you what you want to hear.
Other apps scatter your life across five subscriptions.
Nen gives you clarity, and a home for it.
For anyone tired of AI that agrees with them.
We don't sell your data. We don't train on your conversations. We are entirely self-funded.
